Stony Creek Program

March Newsletter – 2012

Character Trait: Fairness – Be fair by playing by the rules. You know how to treat people fairly. Part of being fair is to resolve conflicts with others. Cooperation and compromise are important parts of showing fairness.

Check the calendar for your home visit time. If you are not scheduled for March, your home visit will be booked in April.

  • March 1– PAC (2:00)
  • March 20 – Stony Creek Musical at the Horizon Stage 7:00 pm.  Doors open at 6:45. Students should arrive at 6:45 and use the backstage door just north of the main entrance.
  • March 23 – April 1 – Spring Break

Musical March 20 at Horizon Stage – The musical will start at 7:00 pm on March 20.The theme for our musical this year is the history of Alberta. Students have been practicing the songs, writing their own speaking parts, rehearsing movement, doing research, and completing critical challenges (rework the piece: This Land is Your Land and naming the musical) to get ready for our show. See the following list for costumes and props that your child will need. Thank you for your help in making our musical a success!

Grade One – In need of cowboy hats. (The grade ones will be from Calgary –cowboy hats, jeans and shirts) If you have a train engineer costume or hat, please contact Mrs. Rutland

Grade Two – Dinosaurs costumes – Mrs. Breitkreuz has provided dinosaur hats, other ideas for costumes: colourful hoddies with triangles pinned to look like scales. If you need material for the triangles, Mrs. Rutland has a few pieces of felt for this. Sponges cut in triangles will also work for this.

Grade Three –Brown t-shirts – we have a few at the school. Contact Mrs. Rutland if you will need one of these. We are in need of someone to help with head pieces for this costume: Buffalo or Moose. Also could use: something for thick fur or fur blankets and moose horns.

Grade Four – Voyageurs, explorers, fur hats, canoe, blankets folded and tied with string or rope to look like furs, etc.

Grade Five – If you have anything that the grade five could use for this, please let us know. 1903 type clothing, cowboy hats and belts, other men’s wear from that era, long dress, a bonnet and scarf.

Grade Six –Girls: Fisherwomen: fishing hats, fishing vests , orange life jackets. Boys: Green or brown shirts, green for brown pants if possible. We have streamers to pin to the shirts.

Field Trip Forms – Please sign and return the attached forms for our field trips. One permission form is for the Horizon Stage musical practice on March 20 and is due by March 15. There are two forms for Aerials Gymnastics to be signed and returned by March22, before spring break. Thank you for helping us complete all of the paper work for the field trips. Aerial’s schedule: April – Mrs. Rutland’s class May- Mrs. Sarauer’s class.

Balanced Literacy Workshop

Last week we were lucky enough to have Becky Wandio in to lead us all in a Balanced Literacy workshop. She brought with her valuable information and examples ranging from grades 1 – 6.

The students and parents all were able to actively participate in activities. One of the activities was a re-work or re-write the piece. We used the song, 12 Days of Christmas in order to create our own rendition of the Christmas song. It was a blast! Later, one of the families went home and created their own version. Here it is below for you all to enjoy!

The 12 Days at Stony Creek

On the 12th Day at Stony Creek, my teachers gave to me…

12 Art Classes,

11 Science Projects,

10 Lively Grade Twos

9 Hands raised,

8 Silent Readers,

7 Grade One Boys,

6 Parent Helpers,

5.…………Golden Smartboards,

4 Doctor Dodge Balls,

3 Crossing Guards,

2 Outdoor Playgrounds

And an……

Itty-Bitty Gym–na–sium

By: Mya and Justin Beamish

Hope you all enjoyed Mya and Justin’s version. Maybe you will try to create your own verses to the Christmas tune above.

Thanks to all who attended and again thank you Mrs. Wandio for a super workshop. We look forward to having another in the New Year. Tentatively scheduled for January 30th 9:30 – 11:30.

Dolch Spelling List and MORE

Some parents were asking about the elementary Dolch spelling lists.

Here is a link to a website that provides Dolch lists, organized by grade level.

Kidzone –> You can search by grade level for the Dolch words under the Reading category. This site also includes many useful resources, such as Math Word Problems.

It can be very beneficial to ensure these common words are spelled correctly. If you do not want to do a full spelling program, but would like to make use of a personal dictionary to enhance dictionary skills as well as spelling then this could be helpful.

Another online Spelling resource is Spellingcity.com. Here you can put in your own Spelling program, or Dolch words for an online, interactive way of practicing the words.

One more online Math resource that I have mentioned a few times at home visits is from the Houghton Mifflin Math company. It is an American company, however, I do like how they follow the Problem Solving Cycle to build good problem solvers. Check them out, Mifflin Math Problem Solving –> You can quickly change the level in your browser by changing the number digit at the end of the link to correspond with each grade. For example, the 1 means grade 1. Change to a 2 and it will be grade 2 level. Up to grade 6. >http://www.eduplace.com/math/mw/problem/prb_1.html
The main page is here: Houghton Mifflin Math and includes even more resources by grade. Here is one Canadian version by Houghton Mifflin Mathematics Canada. It’s not too bad, and they have some brain teasers by grade level, which are problem solving. It just doesn’t have the cool Problem Solving Steps.

I hope you find some of these resources useful. Please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance if you are having difficulty accessing the links, etc.

Thanks!
Tanya P

What if cows produced root beer instead of milk?

Some students were hoping for a prompt to get them thinking during journal time.
The prompt was:

What if cows produced root beer instead of milk?
Here are some quick responses below:

Grade 6 Student:
If cows gave root beer instead of milk? Peoples bones would crack. There would be no CHOCOLATE. Also no cookies, ice cream, chicken corn chowder, muffins and root beer is gross. Except A&W root beer.

Ask Mr. Hubick???

What is your favourite, healthy food?

We are trying out a new way of sharing. The idea is to add your response right on the page. We need to follow some criteria for:

What a healthy food is.

Please include your first name only and examples from the criteria you used in deciding what your favourite healthy food is. The response size is like writing on a sticky note, so you have limited space to share your ideas.

Thank you for your responses!

Reflection from Thanksgiving

Today the students were tired and full from a great Thanksgiving weekend with their families.

During journal writing time, we posted this question on our Smartboard:

What are you thankful for?

The students then added their responses here for us.

Please take a moment and read what the elementary students (grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) were able to share with us.

A few pairs of students typed up their responses:

Now, please share what YOU are thankful for. Thanks!
